A More Equitable Future

A 10-Hour foundation course built on the principles of the CPVA/S methodology- where the emphasis on the teaching and learning of the language, concept, strategies and effective, efficient and elegant procedure for the teaching and learning of the Number Concept. It draws on decades of classroom experience and foundational research by Professor Mahesh Sharma and Sanjay Raghav in teaching practice.

About the Methodology

What is the CPVA/S model

The CPVA/S approach stands for Concrete–Pictorial–Visualisation–Abstract. Unlike the traditional CPA model, CPVA adds one key step: visualisation, the bridge between seeing a picture and understanding the abstract symbol. Students first explore an idea using real objects and precise mathematical language. Next, they draw or picture it. Then they hold that image in their mind and work with it mentally, before finally expressing it using numbers and symbols. A shared “script” — consistent language — ties every stage together, so the concept is easier to remember and easier to recall later.

Rigorous, meaningful practice builds on this understanding, helping students become fluent and confident. Professor Sharma has created specialised tools and resources to support this process.

CTLM’s approach centers on six core skills: number concepts, additive reasoning, multiplicative reasoning, proportional reasoning, algebraic thinking, and geometric thinking. Rooted in cognitive science, these milestones build a strong foundation for every stage of future learning.

CTLM believes every child can become a confident, capable mathematician.

About the Facilitators

Prof Mahesh Sharma

Professor Mahesh Sharma is the founder and President of the Centre for Teaching/Learning of Mathematics, Inc. of Framingham, Massachusetts and Berkshire Mathematics in England. Berkshire Mathematics facilitates his working in the UK and Europe. He is the former President and Professor of Mathematics Education at Cambridge College, where he taught Mathematics and Mathematics Education for more than thirty-five years to undergraduate and graduate students. He is internationally known for his ground-breaking work in Mathematics learning problems and education, particularly dyscalculia and other specific learning disabilities in Mathematics. He is an author, teacher and teacher-trainer, researcher, consultant to public and private schools, as well as a public lecturer. He was the Chief Editor and Publisher of Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, an international, interdisciplinary research Mathematics journal with readership in more than 90 countries, and the Editor of The Math Notebook, a practical source of information for parents and teachers devoted to improving teaching and learning for all children. He provides direct services of evaluation and tutoring for children as well as adults who have learning disabilities such as dyscalculia or face difficulties in learning Mathematics. Professor Sharma works with teachers and school administrators to design strategies to improve Mathematics curriculum and instruction for all. He regularly offers workshops on Mathematics Education for professionals.

Sanjay Raghav

Sanjay Raghav is a mathematics educator, teacher trainer and curriculum developer with extensive experience teaching students from kindergarten through Grade 10. As an educator and operations executive at CTLM, he works closely with Professor Mahesh Sharma on curriculum development, teacher training and research into mathematics pedagogy. His areas of expertise include number concepts, arithmetic, algebraic thinking and geometric reasoning. He has supported students, teachers and schools in developing conceptually sound and effective approaches to mathematics education. Sanjay is also the author of *Dyscalculia and Numeracy*, a book focused on understanding mathematical learning difficulties and strengthening foundational numeracy skills.
